I think as a photographer one aspect I really love about it is that it’s always art. It’s always new and it’s always exciting and nerve-wracking and exhilarating. I always get nervous before every single photo shoot, not bad nerves, just the kind of nerves you get before a game or a show, or anything that excites you really. With this shoot specifically it was different for me in that I was shooting all girls. I wouldn’t label myself a feminist however after our session as I was going through the photos it was really powerful to see a two generations of just girls, and the similarities that bind us together.
Nancy, Sydney and Shelby showed up wearing gorgeous summer dresses and I could sense were a little apprehensive. Sydney mentioned she didn’t really like her school portraits so I made it my personal mission to get some great images for her that she would love. But more importantly, I wanted these girls to know that just being themselves and hanging out, was exactly what I wanted to capture. So as we continued to walk and talk I could see that they were beginning to get more comfortable and just started to be exactly who they were. That’s when all the good stuff comes. 🙂
While we do some posing here and there, I feel like it’s really important to capture the essence of what makes people who they are. A lot of storytelling through my lens. We saw Shelby exploring and being silly, Sydney feeling beautiful and figuring out her place in the world and Mama Nancy being the unconditional rock they lean on. I don’t know that they noticed this, but every time they stood next to their mom…they almost always stood on the exact same side of her the entire shoot.
Something about that familiarity and that comfortable place for the girls, no matter how old they get, is so beautiful to watch. It’s like no matter how old I get, I still hold my moms hand and lay my head in her lap when we watch T.V. It’s my comfortable place.
I had so much fun with these ladies and now I am 100% convinced I need all girl portraits of my family now too. Check out our session in Antioch, Black Diamond Mines. Leave me a comment and let me know, what’s your comfortable place with your family!
