Hello bride-to-be! I’m assuming that’s who you are if you’ve landed here and I’m really excited to talk to you today about fashion. Styling and fashion go hand in hand with great photos, and what you decide to wear for your engagement session really does help in creating the best images possible. The number one question I get the most from all couples is: What do we wear? Let’s get started on some really quick and easy tips to help make your photos incredible.
My number one tip should you not decide to do any of the others is…don’t be afraid to go formal. Like really, really formal. I’m talking full on gowns and blazers, dress shoes all shiny and high heels to lengthen your body. You’ll ask me, “But Liz, isn’t that kind of silly to wear a gown in the middle of a field of dead grass with cars passing by?” No, it is the best thing you can do for your pictures and you will be so happy, I’ve never had a client not love the results when they see what they wore photographed. These are pictures to celebrate a pivotal moment in your life, so let’s break out the bubbly and our fancy attire and get to it!
Don’t Wear Similar Colors
When your thinking of taking pictures together, the idea of both wearing black sounds gorgeous. He could do a black tux and you could do a gorgeous black evening gown and those two look beautiful and will match so well. And those things do look beautiful, in person. On camera you are going to look like you two are turning into one person, your limbs forging with each other and kind of turning into one big mass. When selecting colors, think about contrast and if you want to do the same color family, then stick to doing different tones. Trust me!
Keep Accessories to a Minimum
I LOVE a good accessory and I feel they really elevate your outfit. A groom wearing a fancy watch and some great cuff links, the bride wearing tear-drop earrings and her heirloom bracelet. Try to keep your accessories on a minimalist side though. When we shoot your engagement session we are going with classic, timeless, natural and elegant. Sometimes accessories are trendy, sometimes we layer on too much. Let your beauty shine through and let accessories not steal the show but rather be just an accessory.
Two Birds with One Stone
So here you are getting super fancy and beautified and you didn’t think we could leave out makeup and hair did you! Usually you have a few people in mind as the makeup artist for your wedding day, so my tip is to do your trial before the session and that way you have professional makeup done for your engagement shoot! As for hair, again classic and natural trumps all. I love going to a salon to get a good blow dry for about $40 bucks and it lasts for a few days after. Win/Win!
Engagement sessions run longer then a typical session and the way that I like to create diversity for my clients is by asking them to bring multiple outfit changes. This will give you different looks and a larger selection of diverse shots. Generally, I like to say bring a casual outfit, a casual dressy outfit and a super formal out. I promise you will love the turnout!
That’s it! Those are my tips to really get the most out of your engagement sessions. But most importantly brides…have fun! No matter what you wear, having fun in front of the camera and with your photographer is by far the best way to create beautiful heirloom images. Until next time ladies!
